Sketch
Logistics industry, in China and around the world, has entered a stage of fast growth. Logistics related spending in 2002 amounted to 1900 billion Yuan. Logistics cost accounted for about 20% of GDP. 2002 saw a flourishing third party logistics business in China, with quite a number of hyper state-owned logistics enterprises engaged in it. In the past three years, 70% of the logistics service providers experienced a 30% annual increase in business.
Since China becoming a WTO member, foreign logistics providers have entered into China one after another, with 2/3 of the world top 10 retailers settled in China, and their purchase centers established. It is envisaged that purchase by transnational companies in China would increase from US $20 at this time to US $ 50 billion in 2005. It is predicted China's logistics market in 2003 could be as large as 240 billion Yuan, up by about 26% over that of 2002. Annual growth rate in third party logistics market could reach 25% in the years from 2002 to 2005.
In a fierce competition with overseas logistics service providers, China's logistics industry is encountering increasing pressures as well as opportunities. It is wise to make a timely overall strategic planning in this respect so as to facilitate a healthy development of logistics industry.
This paper, based on authoritative information and latest data, made a comprehensive analysis on China's logistics industry, covering such areas as infrastructure development, sector-wised logistics operation, enterprise logistics, and regional logistics, with an emphasis on third party logistics business. Detailed analysis was also made on subcontracts, selection of suppliers, and trend of development of third party logistics. Topics, such as supply and demand, related policies, foreign investment, projections on development, and investment returns and risks, were all touched upon..
